One way to look inside your body is through an ultrasound. Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves that are inaudible to us. It poses no risk to the pregnant woman or the unborn baby. It has been in use since 1822 and has been used during pregnancy in the Netherlands since the 1960s.

An early ultrasound can be scheduled starting at 6 weeks of pregnancy. It is possible to have one much earlier than that, but it won’t provide you, as a pregnant woman, with any additional information. The baby’s heart begins to beat at 5 weeks and 4 days, but it’s often not visible on an ultrasound until after 6 weeks of pregnancy. To avoid any uncertainty about whether the pregnancy is progressing normally, we prefer to see you after 6 weeks.

Technology

The reflected sound waves are captured and converted into electrical signals, which the ultrasound machine then transforms into a two-dimensional (2D) image. A three-dimensional (3D) image is constructed from multiple 2D images, allowing you to see depth. This gives you a little idea of what your baby will look like.Four-dimensional (4D) means you see moving 3D images, allowing you to watch live what your baby is doing—such as yawning, laughing, frowning, and waving!

Want to know if you’re having a boy or a girl? You can! You can schedule a gender determination with us starting at 13+2 weeks of pregnancy, and you’ll have about a 98% chance of knowing for sure. If you can wait just one more week, starting at 14+5 By this week, the sex can be determined with 99.9% certainty.Every child develops differently, and sometimes—regardless of the number of weeks—it’s still just a little too early to tell whether it’s a boy or a girl. The clearest 3D images (especially of the baby’s face) are available between the 27th and 30th weeks of pregnancy.
