Why good preparation for childbirth is so much more than just making a birth plan.

The New Mom Club – Rosanne van Jole

During pregnancy, many women are preoccupied with the thought of giving birth. How do you recognize contractions? When should you call your midwife? Do you want to give birth at home or in the hospital? You might write a birth plan or take a prenatal class.

And yet, afterward, I often hear the same phrase:
“I actually didn’t know there would be so much coming at me.”

Because preparing for childbirth is about much more than just knowing how dilation works.

Childbirth isn’t just a physical experience. It also demands a mental effort. Trust. Surrender. The ability to find peace while your body is going through something intense. And it’s precisely that aspect that often gets much less attention.

As a midwife, I spent years observing how women primarily prepared for the practical aspects of childbirth, even though the greatest benefit often lies in understanding what happens in your body and mind during those hours.

What do hormones do during childbirth? Why does relaxation really help? What happens when fear or anxiety takes over? How can you prepare yourself so that you don’t feel the need to “control” everything, but instead feel more confident in what your body is capable of?

Being well-prepared doesn’t mean your labor will go perfectly. Nor does it mean everything will go according to plan. But it can help you feel more at ease, give you a better understanding of what you’re feeling, and reduce your fear of the unknown.

And perhaps even more importantly: it helps you approach the transition to motherhood with greater confidence.

After twelve years of working as a midwife—and based on my own experiences as a mother—I realized just how much of a need there is for honest and practical preparation for this phase. Not just medical information, but explanations that help women truly understand what giving birth and becoming a mother do to you.

That’s why I started The New Mom Club—a place where I bring together everything I’ve learned over twelve years of working as a midwife about pregnancy, childbirth, and the early postpartum period.

With online courses, practical explanations, and guidance that is warm, honest, and down-to-earth.
